Protect Yourself from Mail Theft

Writer: Megan AndrewsMegan Andrews

Neighborhoods everywhere are experiencing a rise in mail theft. If you find yourself a victim to this, it is important you file reports with the necessary agencies since mail is often stolen in an effort to obtain personal identifying information such as banking information, account numbers and Social Security Numbers.

Mail theft can be the first step in becoming a victim of identity theft.

Here are the agencies for reporting mail theft. If these agencies do not have documentation of ongoing theft, they are unable to strategize solutions.

US Postal Inspector 1-877-876-2455

Lakewood police department: https://www2.southsound911.org/onlinereporting/ "Report a new incident" will take you through the prompts to mail theft.

If your stolen mail is found on persons being stopped or questioned in regards to other activities, the police will be able to tie that person to the potential theft.
